Theatre Review: Spring Awakening

Theatre Review: Spring Awakening

"Spring Awakening" is a musical adaptation of German playwright Frank Wedekind's original 1891 work of the same name. Wedekind was jailed as a deviant when the play was released and the work was then buried for 100 years after its completion - probably proof of the oppressive society in which the playwright lived. The fact that from its release and subsequent success in 2007 it scored several Tony Awards and earned the show accolades from audiences worldwide goes some way to justifying Wedekind's viewpoint. It also indicates that the themes explored still resonate and that often taboo subjects such as masturbation or youth depression remain as relevant today as in 1891. A cult hit on Broadway, the Sydney Theatre Company staged it in Australia for a short season that ended on 7th March this year. It deals with heavy issues faced by youth in a repressive era including youth suicide, sexual abuse and abortion. Interestingly, as a sign of the discomfort such themes might engender, the STC provides links to various helplines and counseling services on the production's website. Such a warning rightfully indicates the mood that prevails in the show.
